Transportation in Heraklion

Car Rentals

Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore Crete at your own pace.

At the Airport: You’ll find several car rental agencies at Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, including international brands and local providers. We recommend booking in advance to secure the best rates.

Driving in Crete: Keep in mind that while Crete’s main roads are in good condition, some mountainous and rural areas may have narrow and winding roads. A valid driving license and an understanding of local driving laws are essential.

Our suggestion: MCar is the company we’ve used a couple of times to rent a car in the past. Here is the link.

They’ve offered a discount to our guests. You can use the code ManosChristina at the checkout for a 10% discount.

Taxis

Taxis are a convenient option for short distances or if you prefer not to drive. They can be hailed on the street or booked in advance.

Fares: Make sure to ask about the fare before starting your journey or insist on using the meter to avoid surprises. Taxis from the airport and port have fixed rates to certain destinations, which can be a convenient option upon your arrival.

Sharing: Consider sharing rides with other guests to save on costs when traveling to the same destination, like the wedding venue or group outings.

Public Buses

Heraklion’s public bus system is an efficient and economical way to get around, especially for visits to major attractions and nearby towns.

Main Station: The central bus station in Heraklion is located near the port, serving routes across the island, including popular destinations like Knossos, Rethymno, and Chania.

Tickets: Tickets can be purchased on the bus or at ticket booths. Remember to validate your ticket once on board. Schedules and routes are available at the station and online.

Walking and Biking

Heraklion’s city center is pedestrian-friendly, with many attractions, shops, and cafes within walking distance. Exploring on foot is a delightful way to experience the city’s vibrant atmosphere. For longer distances or scenic rides along the coast, consider renting a bike. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise.
